Britain's Got Talent star Ashley Gray has come out as transgender.

Gray reached the finals of the ITV show in and made the top 10 of the UK singles charts with a self-penned track called 'Lighters'.

Speaking on TikTok, he shared his excitement at recently having his first appointment at a gender clinic.

"Basically, I have some exciting news," Gray said. "So, if you didn't know, I'm trans and I've been waiting on the gender clinic waiting list for quite a while Yesterday I had my first appointment, which is really exciting."

"It went really well, I mean, I just cried the whole time, but it went really well. Which means I'm going to be able to change my name on my passport and my gender marker on my passport, which is exciting."

Ash said that he changed his name to Ashley Gray officially a couple of months ago.

He continued: "I feel like a lot of the waiting around for the stuff is money problems. It's so expensive, so going through the NHS is obviously, it is free.

"I feel like I'm going to have updates soon on when I can start T [testosterone]. I'll have to see how long it's gonna be for top surgery I'm just really excited and I will actually keep you guys updated now because I feel like I'm actually getting somewhere with this."

Gray walked onto the BGT stage almost a decade ago on series seven of the ITV show, choosing to perform original songs.

He delighted judges, singing and rapping his way to the finals back in , with his single 'Lighters (The One)' soon charting.

The comments from the judges were full of praise, with Simon Cowell praising an improvement in his piano playing and saying: "I think the song's a hit."

Gray re-recorded 'Lighters' last year to mark the eighth anniversary of his Britain's Got Talent appearance. He also previously appeared on the BBC's reality show All Together Now as one of its strong panel of judges.

Britain's Got Talent's semi-finals start tonight (Monday, May 30) at 8pm on ITV.
