Side Quests
Dragon Quest 8 (3DS) features several old and a couple of new things that you could do on the side of your main adventures. These Side Quests are completely optional and are not required to beat the game, however some of them do provide very valuable rewards that will come in handy for many end game situations.
Cameron's Codex
New to the 3DS version of Dragon Quest 8 is the Cameron's Codex Side Quest which becomes available following the events of the Tower of Alexandria and when you enter Port Prospect. As far as I can tell, you cannot miss this Side Quest because a scene triggers right away as you walk around Port Prospect.
How this Side Quest works is Cameron will give you a Codex (basically a book of things that you need to take photos of). This Codex includes several entries for which you need to take photos of specific things in the game. Each entry provides a different amount of Stamps (1 - 3 to be exact) and these Stamps are used to complete Stamp Cards which provide very useful items upon completion. Once you take the photo and it registers as "Complete" then return to Cameron.
Now one thing that you may notice upon receiving the Codex is that there are only certain entries available. That is because entries within the Codex unlock as you enter certain towns or complete key points in the main story line. Now even though a Codex Entry isn't unlock doesn't prevent you from taking a photo of the object. You just cannot fully complete it until you unlock the entry.
Back to unlocking the Codex, following the cutscene with Cameron that was mentioned earlier, he requests that you take a photo of him. In order to take a photo, press the Start Button on the 3DS to pull out your camera. Using the Joystick, rotate the camera so that it is aimed at Cameron and then press the A Button to take the photo. Save the photo the memory (you have 100 photo slots). Speak to Cameron again and he will finally give you the Codex. From here, you must go outside and take a photo of any random monster and then return to Cameron. Once this tutorial is all done then the Codex unlocks for actual use.

No Dragon Quest is complete without an obligatory casino and guess what, this game has two casinos! There is one casino in Pickham and it is available right away while the one in Baccarat will take some time to unlock which is sad because it has the best casino game.
The casinos in this game uses their own currency, known as Casino Tokens which can be purchased at either casino for 20G each. These tokens can be used interchangeably between the two casino. However, you CANNOT sell Tokens for Gold so be careful when visiting the casinos.
Dragon Quest 8 doesn't feature as many casino games as you may have seen in other Dragon Quest games however that is fine as there is only one game that matters to and that is Roulette.
IMPORTANT: Some of you may think that this is a bit cheesy but I ALWAYS Save and Quicksave before playing a game and if I lose, then I reload my save. If I win big, then I make another save. This allows me to make tokens on my original investment without having to invest further gold. If only this method worked in real life. |
Gold Farming: Even though you cannot sell Tokens for Gold doesn't prevent you from selling the items purchased for gold. It has been documented that you would earn the best "bang for your buck" by purchasing either Magic Waters or Prayer Rings and selling them for gold. |
SLOTS:
No casino is complete without Slot Machines. There really isn't anything special about these Slot Machines. They only have Three Reels. There are five locations that you can bet on so the more locations you bet on, the more likely you will win, however will the win be profitable? Now typically every Dragon Quest game has at least one "Broken" Slot Machine that has a higher chance of winning. I am unsure if that is true for this game (please correct me if I am wrong).

This is the game to play if you are looking to farm Casino Tokens. I have managed to transform 1,000 Tokens into 400,000 within a couple of hours using my 21 Strategy. Roulette is a very simple game, you either bet a number, multiple numbers, split numbers, take thirds, halves, odds, evens, red or blue, etc. After placing the bet, a ball is thrown around a rotating table that contains these numbers. Eventually the ball will come to a rest within a number. If you some how selected the correct number then you win, otherwise you lose everything!
I will be using some real life casino terminology and practices however the same philosophy applies to this game |
There are two terms that you should know before getting into betting and that is Inside Betting which includes the numbers 0 - 27. Bets for these are typically low, being the minimum of $1.00 each. The other term is Outside Betting which are the Thirds, Evens/Odds, and Red/Blue. Bets for these must always be the house minimum (ie: $10.00). Most new players usually default to these bets as they are the simplest but they are also the least effective.
Betting Options | ||
---|---|---|
Inside Betting | ||
Bet | Description | Payout Ratio |
Single Number | Enough said, pick a number and hope it hits. | 28:1 |
Double Number | Place your chips between two numbers. This gets you more options but with a lower payout | 14:1 |
Quad Number | Place your chips between four numbers. Same concept as above but the payout is even lower | 7:1 |
Column | There are 9 columns on the board (ie: 1, 2, 3 is a column). Place your chip on the line below the lowest number. This option gives you three numbers to play with. | 8:1 |
Double Column | This is the almost the same as Column Betting however now you are placing your bet between two numbers thus giving you six numbers to play with. | 5:1 |
Outside Betting | ||
Thirds (Column) | As you can see in the picture, there are three arrows pointing upward. These are called the 1st Third, 2nd Third, 3rd Third. Placing a bet on one of these spots gets you all 9 numbers in the area. | 3:1 |
Thirds (Row) | Same as above however if you look to the right, there are three arrows point left into three separate rows. | 3:1 |
Even / Odds | Pretty simple, bet Even gets you all the Even Numbers; Odds gets all the Odd Numbers. IMPORTANT: There is one more Odd than Even so ALWAYS choose Odds | 2:1 |
Red / Blue | Every number is either Red or Blue. Betting the color gets you all those numbers of the color. IMPORTANT: There is one more Red than Blue so ALWAYS choose Red | 2:1 |
So what exactly are Ratios? Well first off you need to understand Roulette. Roulette is a game of probabilities which equates to chances of success. For example, if you only bet the Number 1 then you have a 1 in 28 chance of winning (ie: Theoretically the number should show up once every 28 spins). That being said, every unit that you place on the number gets earns you 28 in return. This is why we see Single Number with a ratio of 28:1. On the other hand, 50% of the numbers are Red and the other 50% are Blue every roll should go Red, Blue, Red, Blue etc so you should win every other time if we only bet Red. In this instance, for every unit you bet, you win 2 in return hence 2:1.
The key to success in this game is understanding probabilities and augmenting them in such a way that they favor you more than the house. Many people do not understand this when playing Roulette and thus bet in such a chaotic method that leads to high chances of failure.
Now before going over my 21 Strategy, I will be going over the most common strategy that I have seen for Dragon Quest 8's roulette game and why it is bad:
Betting The Third (Bad Strategy):
How this strategy works is you first choose a Column Third (ie: the 1st Third). Now it doesn't matter which one you choose though the middle third does give more betting options. Anyway, you choose your third and then you bet every possible Single, Double, Quad, Column, Double Column associate with this third as well as betting the Thirds (Column). I believe the max bet for this should be 15,500 Tokens. What you want is for one of these numbers to be a winner, preferably the 5 as it will earn the most winnings (See chart below based on 1 token bet per space for a total of 31 tokens):
Winnings | ||
---|---|---|
Num | Payout | Net Winnings |
1 | 79 | 48 |
2 | 100 | 69 |
3 | 79 | 48 |
4 | 105 | 74 |
5 | 133 | 102 |
6 | 105 | 74 |
7 | 79 | 48 |
8 | 100 | 69 |
9 | 79 | 48 |
So as you can see, numbers closer to the 5 get you the better winnings with the 5 earning a total net gain of 102 Tokens (or 51,000 if you were doing max bets) with the worst winnings being 48 Tokens (or 24,000 at max bet). So compared to my strategy, this one probably profits the most. But then why is it a bad strategy? Well think of the layout of the board (as shown in the image above). By selecting these nine numbers you have essentially scattered yourself across the entire board. This lowers your probabilities of winning because the ball is going to be bouncing in and out of numbers which leads to the ball bouncing out of your number and into one of the many of the unclaimed numbers. As stated earlier, a bet will win you a lot of tokens however you will be losing and reloading more compared to my upcoming strategy.
Zerro's 21 Strategy (Good Strategy):
Okay so what you are going to be doing is choosing Nine Number just as the above strategy did but this time you will be putting some thought into your decision. Nine Number gives you a 33% chance of winning which is okay, it's the same chance as the above strategy, but you can augment this more to increase our odds of winning. First, examine your Roulette Board as I have done above. I see that the following numbers are next to each other (1, 8, 16, 26, 7, 15, 27, 21, 4 ignoring 0). Betting these numbers will increase our chances of winning because we know the ball will bounce out of numbers so by picking Nine Numbers next to each other, you thus have a higher chance of the ball bouncing into one of your other numbers. The problem with this though is you are leaving a large portion of the board open.
Lets go a step further. Instead of betting Single Numbers lets bet Double Numbers. I'm going to take the same Nine Chips that I used previously and place them on the following doubles (1+4, 5+6, 7+10, 12+15, 13+14, 16+17, 19+22, 20+21, 26+27). This bumps my default probability up to 67% with the same number of chips. Granted the payout is now cut in half but at least I will be winning more frequently. The below image shows our numbers in Yellow and the losers in Red:
As you can see, many of your numbers are next to each other and you only have a one gap in between a couple of numbers. So this is how you improve your chances at winning at roulette (both here and real life).
So why is this strategy called "21"? Well that's because you will be betting in increments of 21 units with a max bet of 21,000 (or you could do 19,000 which I will explain at the end. Hopefully the below image will explain my betting scheme clearly:
The Purple and Orange (used for 19,000 variant) are all of you bets. This gives you five different categories of winners:
Type | Description |
---|---|
Total Loser | These are the numbers that you did not bet and will result in a complete loss if the ball lands on one of them. |
Partial Loser | The 18 is a partial loser because three of the Orange Bets activate it. Landing an 18 would earn you 9,000Tokens which is a 12,000 loss. |
Break Even | Break Even means you don't earn anything and you don't lose anything, you just get your investment of 21,000 back. Break Evens are valuable because they reduce the amount of resets you would have to do if some of these numbers weren't bet. The Break Even Numbers are: 1, 6, 12, 22, 26, 27. |
Winners | Winners are number that will earn you a profit. These numbers are: 4, 5, 7, 10, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 19, 20 |
Jackpot | These are the numbers that you are hoping will hit as they provide the most winnings: 16, 17 |
Below are our Payouts if you were only betting 5 Tokens for a total of 210 Tokens.
Winnings | ||
---|---|---|
Num | Payout | Net Winnings |
1 | 210 | 0 |
4 | 350 | 140 |
5 | 280 | 70 |
6 | 210 | 0 |
7 | 280 | 70 |
10 | 280 | 70 |
12 | 210 | 0 |
13 | 450 | 240 |
14 | 450 | 240 |
15 | 345 | 135 |
16 | 510 | 300 |
17 | 510 | 300 |
18 | 90 | -120 |
19 | 410 | 200 |
20 | 410 | 200 |
21 | 235 | 25 |
22 | 210 | 0 |
26 | 210 | 0 |
27 | 210 | 0 |
In conclusion, you may not be winning as much money per spin as the previous strategy but you will be winning more frequently thus reducing the amount of times that you need to reload the game (Or farm more gold for tokens). Within probably two hours I managed to turn 1,600 Tokens into 400,000 Tokens.
19 Variant
The 19 Variant is essentially the same as the the 21 Strategy however you do not bet the Orange Tokens (which equates to 2,000 Tokens). This means you no longer have the 18 on the board and the 16 and 17 are paying out slightly less. On the plus side, all of your numbers are now winners. The 16 and 17 will be making a profit of 230 and all of our Break Evens will be making 20. Now this strategy may in fact be better than the 21 Strategy however I haven't tested both of them out enough to prove which is better.
Dodgey Dave's
The Dodgey Dave Side Quest becomes available following the events of the Swordsman's Labyrinth. You can find Dodgey Dave in the back room of the Eastern Pub in Pickham. Just speak with the bartender to gain access.
How this Side Quest works is Dave will request you to bring him something, typically something that can only be crafted. When you bring him the item, he will either give you Gold or another Item in return. He will then ask you for another item. Once you give him the final Item then the cycle starts over again, this time the rewards are lower than the first time you gave him the items.

Morrie's Monster Arena
Morrie's Monster Arena is an optional Side Quest in Dragon Quest 8 in which you fight special monsters on the overworld, known as Infamous Monsters, and upon defeating them, they join your Monster Party (which has a party limit). These monsters can then either be used while fighting normally throughout the game, or more importantly in the Monster Arena in order to win various rewards.
The Monster Arena initially becomes available as you travel on the road to Pickham. To the east you will see a weirdly shaped building known as Morrie's Place. Head up the ramp to the roof and speak to the colorfully dressed manned known as Morrie. He will give you Three Morrie's Memos indicating Infamous Monsters that he wants you to defeat. This part of the Side Quest cannot be fully completed until you reach Castle Trodain.
Morrie's Memos | ||
---|---|---|
No | Infamous Monster | Location |
1 | Slimey Smiles | Located near the entrance to Castle Trodain |
2 | Lonely Joe | Located on the pathway to the Ruined Abbey |
3 | Squiggles | Located on the beach southwest of Pickham |
Note: Defeated Infamous Monsters will either drop a Bronze, Silver or Gold Monster Coin which can be sold for 200, 500, 1,000G respectively. |
Return to Morrie after defeating the above three Infamous Monsters and he will finally grant you access to inside his place. You will now have access to a Monster Team of 3 (Which will grow from completing arena ranks) as well as compete in the Monster Arena.
In order to enter the Monster Arena, you need to first select a Rank to compete in. At the start you may only compete in Rank G however more ranks become available as you win a rank. You will also need to pay and entry fee in order to compete. Once this is done, select your preferred Monster Team and a 3 Stage tournament begins. You will NOT have any control over your Monster Team throughout the tournament. Your monsters will retain their current Health and Magic at the end of each stage. That being said, all you really can hope for is a good team and good luck. I have had times where my party could have won but ended up acting stupidly on one of the stages.
Now before you decide to compete in the area be aware that your current party consists of the above three Infamous Monsters and if you remember, they were very easy to defeat. I definitely recommend trading them out for more versatile monsters. Another thing to keep in mind is that not all Infamous Monsters can be recruited right away. Some of them require you to complete certain Ranks in order to be recruited. Also, some monster may only show up during the day or night. Anyway back to forming your team: Now I am not an expert at the arena. What I know is what I've read from other faqs. Below will be each Rank with their information as well as my recommended team. This does not mean that this is the only combination that can win the tournament, it just means these are the teams that worked for me.

Princess Minnie
Throughout the game are these things called Mini Medals which are scattered across the world in either towns, dungeons, or hidden on the overworld. These mini medals hold no monetary value. You cannot sell them or use them to buy anything from shops. Instead, what you do is you hand them in to this woman known as Princess Minnie and she will give you really awesome rewards in return. Now initially you don't gain access to Princess Minnie until after getting your ship. Her castle is located on a solitary island between the northern and southern continents, just south west of where you get your ship. I highly recommend collecting all of these mini medals as the rewards for them are quite awesome.
