Casino De Genting History

The casino sits on top of an integrated hill resort. Many know about its grandeur and splendour but not many are aware of the challenges faced during its conceptualization and construction. Established in 1971, Casino de Genting was founded by Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong as Malaysia’s first and only land-based casino. Despite being exclusive to non-Muslims, the casino still manages to attract thousands of guests from across the globe.

The Inspiration

The idea of building a hill resort came to its founder during his trip to Cameron Highlands as he was working on a hydro-electric power development. While there, Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong immensely enjoyed the crisp mountain air. He desired to experience the same when he goes back to Malaysia. He dreamt of giving Malaysians access to a cool mountain holiday complete with loads of amenities that they can truly enjoy.

The Journey

His vision wasn’t easy to put into action. Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong shared in his autobiography, “My Story,” that he faced various challenges with surveyors and engineers as they were mapping the area’s topography in 1963. They had to go through dense jungles, overcome steep mountains, and waded through rivers and streams before they were able to reach the summit. These challenges did not do much to dampen Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong’s spirits. He continued working on to realize his dreams of spending holidays atop a mountain.

Finally, after traversing the tropical jungle and rugged terrains, the ideal venue was identified. A 1,800 metre Gunung Ulu Kali, located only 58 kilometres away from Kuala Lumpur, was transformed from being a hard to reach mountain into the country’s most coveted holiday destination.

In partnership with Tan Sri Haji Mohammed Noah bin Omar, Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong set up a private enterprise, Genting Highlands Berhad. They were able to secure a permit to construct the hill resort. They also received approval to alienate 2,800 acres and 12,000 acres of land from the Selangor and Pahang State Government, respectively to build the access road.
Construction of the access road took four years to complete. This connected Genting Sempah to the Gunung Ulu Kali peak.

The Realization of a Dream

The completion of the access road was marked by the official laying of the foundation stone for the first hotel of the resort. The former Prime Minister YTM Tunku Abdul Rahman was impressed with the concept and the ability of the private sector to complete such herculean task without any government assistance. This has left an impression that a gaming licence was eventually suggested to help boost the area’s development and success.

The success of the hotel spurred the construction of several developments in the area including the Genting Hotel (now Genting Grand), Awana Genting Highlands Golf & Country Resort (now Awana Hotel), Resort Hotel and Genting Indoor Theme Park, Outdoor Themepark, Highlands Hotel, and the Genting Skyway Cable Car System. With a top speed of 21.6 kilometres per hour, the Genting Skyway is regarded as the world’s fastest mono cable car system. How To Get There

Genting Highlands is an accessible resort as it is only a few kilometres away from urban areas. It is also the only integrated hill resort that is accessible via a tolled expressway. Guests can take Exit 80 to Genting Highlands. It is located at Genting Sempah along the Pahang-Selangor border before approaching the Genting Sempah tunnel. The 18-kilometre road will be connecting the expressway exit to the mountain peak.
