The resort was created within the framework of the Mission Racine which aimed to develop tourism on the Languedoc coast.

This state mission, led by Sir Charles de Gaulle and his Prime Minister Georges Pompidou, had nearly km of fine sand laid out on the Mediterranean coast.

For this mission, Pierre Racine worked with several architects, including Georges Candilis, who designed the architecture of the Carrats de Port Leucate, notably inspired by Greece.
