The Casino de Monte Carlo, more colloquially known as Monte-Carlo Casino, is an exceptionally prominent landmark located in the Principality of Monaco, a sovereign city-state and country along the French Riviera. As the name and locale suggest, this area attracts the gentry and the most affluent of the populace.

Monte-Carlo Casino proposes a dress code befitting its luxury edifice. Appropriate attire is stressed for visitors and patrons, with gentlemen strongly encouraged to wear a jacket or sport coat after 8 p.m. No specific dress code is stipulated for ladies other than a requirement to be “smartly dressed.”

It is expected that casino guests are persons of a certain ilk, those with the ability to discern what “appropriate attire” intimates. Although casual dress is acceptable, visitors must refrain from wearing ripped jeans and flip flops, for example.

Casino de Monte Carlo – Beginnings

The Monte-Carlo Casino in all its opulence is among Monaco’s most exclusive gambling and entertainment venues, and one of the principality’s most preeminent attractions.

The complex consisting of an opera, a ballet, and the infamous casino is the brainchild of François Blanc, through his company Societe des Bains de Mer et du Cercle des Etrangers. The project was commissioned by the mother of Prince Charles III as an alternative to uplift Monaco from a veritable farming town.

After successfully raising the seed capital of just over four million francs through the sale of 80% of its lands, the building of the casino got underway in 1865. Just about five years later, the grandiose structure was unveiled.

Architect Charles Garnier, previously affiliated with the Paris Opera, another striking build, lent his talent to designing and decorating the Monte-Carlo Casino.

At the start of construction, François Blanc said ‘we should do nothing here as it is done elsewhere’. The collaboration with Garnier produced a masterpiece that has since not been duplicated.

Awe-inspiring decor scattered throughout its sophisticated and intricately curated interiors complete with Bohemian crystal chandeliers blends well with its Belle Époque architecture.

Well-appointed gambling salons sporting hand-crafted gaming tables offer guests a truly cultured and dazzling all-round experience.

Monte-Carlo Casino Offerings

The Monte-Carlo Casino boasts several salons wherein guests may participate in various gambling and entertainment activities.

Chief among the offerings are French Roulette, Trente et Quarante, Baccarat, Black Jack, and Poker Texas Hold’em Ultimate.

Guests may opt to place higher, more ambitious bets in the private salons where the dress code is strictly enforced.

Jackets, blazers, or sport coats are mandatory for gentlemen during the late evening if they wish to enter rooms such as the Salle Médecin. These should be matched with dark-colored trousers or jeans and smart casual shoes.

During casino cleaning hours from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., tourists may enter in order to feast their eyes on the baroque finishes and take Instagram worthy shots perfectly posed to evoke the envy of their friends. No gambling is permitted during this time.

Although more casual attire is accepted during the daytime in the Atrium and Salle Renaissance rooms, all guests are expected to be smartly dressed, which means, no flip-flops, sneakers, or activewear even among tourists who are just along for a glamorous tour.

A dress code is enforced in order to complement the atmosphere for which Monaco, in general, and the Monte-Carlo Casino specifically are known. It is therefore only natural that guests are required to adhere to strict guidelines regarding a dress code that predicates such luxury.

Citizens of Monaco are prohibited entry into the gaming rooms of the casino.

Cultural Significance

The Casino de Monte Carlo rapidly established Monaco as one of the premier hotspots in Europe for quality entertainment and unlimited possibilities for hobnobbing with the elite.

The interior of the building is bedecked with marble and replete with bronze statues throughout.  The design and various ornamentation quickly made the casino the showpiece of the complex, one which commands the attention of gamblers and tourists alike.

It derives some of its allure from being closely associated with James Bond, having been featured in multiple Bond films, among them 1995’s ‘GoldenEye’.

The income generated from the Monte-Carlo Casino has stimulated economic development in Monaco, propelling the principality to becoming one of the top-tier hotspots for leisure travel among the wealthy.

The success of the casino was also a benefit for the citizenry as eventually, income taxes were abolished for the people of Monaco. Established as a tax haven due to low business taxes, as many as thirty percent of the residents in the principality are millionaires.

The Art of Gaming, The Game of Art

The names Monaco and Monte-Carlo conjure up a locale teeming with very well dressed and classy well-to-do ladies and urbane gentlemen who have the means to enjoy the very best of what life has to offer.

The Casino itself has been designed to a high standard of quality and sophistication with keen attention to detail.

A quote attributed to its founder, François Blanc, beautifully sums up the mystique, fascination, and glamour that is undoubtedly Monte-Carlo Casino, ‘This place has to be about dreams, enjoyment, and beauty.’

He was able to deliver just that.
