Where to stay in Nice

Let’s zoom in on every place to stay in Nice. Find out what the atmosphere is like and what there is to see and do in every area.

You might notice that the Promenade des Anglais is not mentioned as a separate area. That&#;s because this coastal boulevard is not really a neighborhood but rather part of the Carré d&#;Or and Gambetta district (and all other districts further west). The prolongation of the Promenade des Anglais that fringes Vieux-Nice is known as the Quai des États-Unis.

Vieux-Nice is one of the best neighborhoods in Nice France

Vieux-Nice (including the Quai des États-Unis)

Where to stay in Nice map Vieux-Nice

Nestled at the foot of Castle Hill, bordered by the Place Garibaldi, the Place Masséna, and the Quai des États-Unis lies the historic and touristic heart of Nice. Its maze of meandering streets, colorful facades, and baroque-style buildings make Vieux-Nice, or Old Town Nice one of the most lively and enchanting places to stay in Nice.

Many attractions are located within Nice Old Town, from the Sun Fountain at the Place Masséna to the Lascaris Palais and the Opera house. The most favorite hang-out is the Cours Saleya. This pedestrian promenade is where the popular flower market takes place every morning. In the evening, it transforms into a convivial antique and souvenir market. The many restaurants that line the Cours Saleya are very popular with tourists.

Another amazing place in Vieux-Nice to spend a relaxing afternoon or evening is the picturesque Place Rossetti in the shadow of the Sainte-Réparate cathedral.

Vieux-Nice is located along the Quai des États, which is the extension of the Promenade des Anglais and runs from Beau-Rivage beach up to Castle Hill. It&#;s home to some of the best beaches in Nice: the Beau Rivage private beach, the Opéra public and private beaches, the Ponchette public beach, and the Castel semi-private beach.

Conclusion: Vieux-Nice is the best place to stay in Nice for sightseeing and, as a result, perfect for short jaunts and first-time visitors.

Best hotels to stay in Vieux-Nice

Here&#;s our selection of the best places to stay in Vieux-Nice.

Enjoy a carefree stay in a picture-perfect setting. Contrary to what its name suggests, this elegant hotel doesn&#;t overlook the Cours Saleya Flower Market but is located 2 blocks further north.
  • Mid-range hotel: Hôtel Nice Beau Rivage
This hotel offers an unbeatable location, right at the southwest corner of Nice Old Town, next to the Carré d&#;Or and across from the beach. It even has its private beach at which guests of the hotel enjoy a preferential rate.
  • Affordable hotel: Hôtel Rossetti
This minimalist hotel with a contemporary touch is located right next to the Sainte-Réparate cathedral at the convivial Place Rossetti, in the heart of Vieux-Nice.

Carré d&#;Or (including the Promenade des Anglais)

Where to stay in Nice map Carré d'Or

As the name suggests, the Carré d’Or or Golden Square is the most prestigious neighborhood in Nice. It’s located just west of Vieux-Nice and bordered by the Boulevard Gambetta.

The Carré d’Or is known for its Haussmannian layout and Belle Époque architecture. Stately homes, former palaces, luxury hotels, and high-end boutiques proudly stand side by side.

Tourist attractions include the Villa Masséna Museum, where you can learn about the history of Nice, and the neo-gothic Anglican Church. The main draw, however, is the beautiful stretch of the Promenade des Anglais. It’s where you’ll find private and public beaches such as Bella Nissa beach, Blue beach, Le Temps d’un Été beach, and Ruhl beach as well as the iconic Le Negresco.

The Carré d’Or is also a lively neighborhood after dark thanks to the ever-bustling Rue Masséna and Place Magenta. For another form of entertainment, you could spend the night at the Casino Palais de la Méditerranée or Casino Barrière Le Ruhl Nice, both of which are located at the Promenade des Anglais.

This is by far our favorite area for a stay in Nice with kids. Many travel blogs will tell you otherwise and promote the Cimiez neighborhood for families. But, after about a dozen of visits to Nice with kids, we can assure you that Cimiez is not the best place to stay in Nice for families. It may be a great place to live in Nice for residents with kids but doesn’t make for the best place to stay in Nice for family travelers. It&#;s way too far from the tourist attractions and the beach. Know that most of the travel bloggers who suggest Cimiez for families, in fact travel without kids.

Conclusion: Carré d&#;Or is the best place to stay in Nice for relaxation, shopping, and nightlife. It&#;s also by far the best area in Nice to stay with kids. Take it from this traveling family.

Le Negresco is located in the best area to stay in Nice France

Best hotels to stay in Carré d&#;Or

Another eye-catching property along the Promenade des Anglais. It offers exceptionally spacious rooms (including family rooms) and a panoramic patio with an outdoor swimming pool overlooking the Baie des Anges.
  • Boutique hotel: Hôtel Villa Victoria

  • Affordable boutique hotel: Le Dortoir Boutique Suites

  • Apartment: La Mignonne
This modern apartment with a balcony is located in the heart of the Carré d&#;Or and accommodates up to 4 persons.

Le Port

Where to stay in Nice map Le Port

The Port of Nice is located at the foot of Castle Hill, the location of the former military citadel that separates Nice Old Town from the Port. Castle Hill overlooks the Baie des Anges on one side and the port on the other. The views over Le Port Lympia, named after the source Lympia that fed the marshland that was once there, are picture-perfect.

The harbor is of great economic importance to the city. In addition to the berthed luxury yachts and the day trip ferries to other French Riviera towns, it also accommodates cruise ships and ferries to Corsica, Sardinia, and even Sicily.

The central quay is called Place de l’Île de Beauté, freely translated as Square of the Isle of Beauty, referring to the Corsica connection. It’s home to the neoclassical Church of Notre-Dame-du-Port with its monumental columns.

The ochre Italian-style houses that frame the port house a variety of restaurants and cafés. It&#;s a lively place where the atmosphere is always on top.

You’ll also find many antique shops and some unique boutiques in this neighborhood of Nice. Le Port is also home to the flea market Les Puces de Nice and a monthly open-air brocante at the Place Garibaldi.

Conclusion: The Port is the best place to stay in Nice for antique shopping, trendy boutiques, and nightlife. It&#;s also the perfect starting point for day trips from Nice.

Best hotels to stay at the Port

Here&#;s our selection of the best places to stay in the Port district.

  • Mid-range hotel: Ibis Styles Nice Vieux Port
A fresh and clean hotel located within walking distance of all major landmarks and close to the Place Garibaldi, where two of the city&#;s tramlines halt.
  • Mid-range hotel: Hôtel Le Saint Paul
The best location to stay in Nice if you want a room with a view of the Mediterranean for a very reasonable price. It&#;s located on the eastern side of the port, near Coco beach and towards Villefranche-sur-Mer and Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, so it&#;s a bit further away from the tourist attractions in Nice than other hotels on this list.
  • Apartment: L&#;Abeille
Spacious and well-appointed boutique apartments just steps away from Place Garibaldi. This property even has its relaxing garden.
Avenue Jean Medecin is the main shopping street

Jean-Médecin

Where to stay in Nice map Jean-Medecin

The Avenue Jean-Médecin forms the commercial heart of Nice. It interconnects various Nice neighborhoods such as the Carré d’Or, Vieux-Nice, the Musicians, and Carabacel districts as it leads to the railway station. Tram line 1 follows the entire length of this high street.

A variety of shops, malls, and eateries line Avenue Jean-Médecin. You’ll find the Galeries Lafayette in the southern section, a collection of boutiques and fast fashion brands in the middle section, and a more diverse offer in the northern section.

The starting point of this avenue crosses the Place Masséna, which is one of the most striking places to visit in Nice. It connects to the Promenade du Paillon with its enchanting water mirror fountain. This park is a popular hangout for families.

I noticed that several travel sites refer to this part of the city as New Town but I have no idea where they picked it up. This avenue has been around since the 19th century and is not known as New Town locally.

Conclusion: Jean-Médecin is the best place to stay in Nice for shopping.

Best hotels to stay in Jean-Médecin

Here&#;s our selection of the best places to stay near Nice&#;s Avenue Jean-Médecin.

  • Affordable hotel: Hotel du Centre
The cozy decor and the breakfast terrace make this hotel an excellent choice for a budget-friendly stay in Nice.

Gambetta &#; Fleurs (including the Promenade des Anglais)

Where to stay in Nice map Gambetta

This is the westernmost neighborhood on our list of places to stay in Nice. It’s located right next to the Carré d’Or, right along the Promenade des Anglais. It’s named after two streets that frame this area: the Avenue des Fleurs and the Boulevard Gambetta.

You won’t find any major tourist attractions in this tranquil corner. Then again, it’s located close enough to the other Nice neighborhoods so that you won’t have to miss out on anything. What you will find is plenty of local shops and restaurants.

From an architectural point of view, the Gambetta &#; Fleurs quarter is a true stunner thanks to the stately Art-deco and Belle Époque facades of the city palaces and mansions that line the streets.

In the south, this pleasant neighborhood is fringed by Voilier beach and Forum beach.

There aren&#;t that many hotels in the small Gambetta &#; Fleur district but the existing ones happen to be very reasonably priced.

Conclusion: Gambetta &#; Fleurs is the best place to stay in Nice on a budget.

Cimiez

Where to stay in Nice map Cimiez

Cimiez is situated north of the city center, on the site of an ancient Roman city with its amphitheater and public baths. The Archaeological Museum of Nice-Cimiez and Garden of the Arenas allow you to learn more about this fascinating history and visit the ruins and vast olive groves.

In the 9th century, a Monastery was built in Cimiez by the Brothers of the Abbey of Saint-Pons. While the Monastery is certainly worth a visit, the true highlight is its garden with its romantic fountain, the climbing roses, exotic trees, and Mediterranean plants.

During the Belle Époque, Cimiez became a hotspot for European aristocrats. As a result, the most opulent mansions and palaces were constructed to accommodate this new clientele. One example is the Excelsior Regina, the residence of English Queen Victoria.

This leafy environment with views of the Mediterranean is now home to two of Nice’s most renowned museums: the Matisse Museum and the Chagall Museum.

The Cimiez neighborhood is a haven of peace is a nice place to stay away from the hustle and bustle of the Nice city center.

Conclusion: Cimiez is the best place to stay in Nice for art and culture.

FAQ on where to stay in Nice

By now you must have a good idea of which Nice area you should stay in. Let&#;s conclude this Nice accommodation guide with our best answers to some frequently asked questions.

What area is best to stay in Nice France?

The best area to stay in Nice France depends on your personal preference and budget. Overall, Vieux-Nice is excellent for sightseeing and nightlife. The Carré d&#;Or & Promenade des Anglais are the best places to stay in Nice for families thanks to the proximity of beaches, shopping, and the Old Town. The Gambetta-Fleurs area is perfect for budget travelers and the Cimiez district is the culture hub.

How many nights should I stay in Nice?

How many nights to stay in Nice depends on your travel plans: Is Nice the sole focus of your visit or do you plan on exploring more places on the French Riviera?
A weekend break in Nice will allow you to soak up the atmosphere and visit the main tourist attractions. If you also plan on visiting more than one museum or spending some time at the beach, then four nights would be perfect.
Nice&#;s central location makes it an excellent travel base to explore the French Riviera. If you plan on taking day trips from Nice, then you could easily spend a week in Nice.

Is Nice, France, a walkable city?

Nice is walkable for the most part. The main areas in Nice are all connected by either the scenic promenade or the charming streets of the Old Town. The only exception is the Cimiez district. While you could technically walk from the Promenade to Cimiez, it&#;s not the most pleasant uphill walk.
Thanks to Nice&#;s excellent public transportation network, you can get to Cimiez in 15 minutes. Line 5 runs from stop Masséna &#; Guitry in Downtown Nice to stop Arènes &#; Musée Matisse in Cimiez.

Which is the most affordable area to stay in Nice?

The most affordable places to stay in Nice would be the Libération area (nicknamed La Libé) just north of the Nice-Ville train station and the Gambetta &#; Fleurs area. Villa Saint Hubert is a well-rated budget hotel in the Libération neighborhood.
Then again, we mentioned other affordable hotels that are located in the center of the action as well. Because of their excellent situation, Le Dortoir Boutique Suites in the Carré d&#;Or & Hôtel Rossetti in Vieux-Nice are our favorite budget hotels in Nice.
If you&#;re looking for more space and privacy without the hefty price tag, then one of the tranquil suburbs or Nice might be for you. Our favorite is Mont Boron, the verdant hill east of Nice. It&#;s where you can find some gorgeous French Riviera villas with private pools such as this one.

Is Nice safe at night?

Don&#;t let your search for affordable accommodation in Nice lead you to the lesser-safe neighborhoods. Examples are Ariane and Roquebilière. Luckily, these districts are located far enough from the city center to end up there by accident.
At night, the Nice neighborhoods north of the Port and east of Cimiez should be avoided. The same goes for the direct vicinity of the train station.

Is it better to stay in Nice or Cannes?

While both Nice and Cannes offer a quintessential French Riviera experience, they are unique in their own right. Nice is the best place to stay since it offers the perfect blend of history, culture, shopping, beaches, nightlife, and connectivity to other destinations in the South of France. However, if you prefer sandy beaches, designer boutiques, and an easy connection to the Lérins Islands, then Cannes might be a better choice.

To me, there's nothing more invigorating than exploring someplace new. As an avid traveler who appreciates the finer things in life, I discover destinations with all senses: hearing the language, tasting the food, observing local customs I love getting lost in unknown cities with the rest of the CosmopoliClan by my side. Other destinations, such as Hawaii, Dubai, Portugal and Paris, may be more familiar but are so amazing that I want to visit over and over again.
