The prolongation of the Promenade des Anglais that fringes Vieux-Nice is known as the Quai des États-Unis.

Vieux-Nice (including the Quai des États-Unis)

Nestled at the foot of Castle Hill, bordered by the Place Garibaldi, the Place Masséna, and the Quai des États-Unis lies the historic and touristic heart of Nice. Its maze of meandering streets, colorful facades, and baroque-style buildings make Vieux-Nice, or Old Town Nice one of the most lively and enchanting places to stay in Nice.

Many attractions are located within Nice Old Town, from the Sun Fountain at the Place Masséna to the Lascaris Palais and the Opera house. The most favorite hang-out is the Cours Saleya. Tourist attractions include the Villa Masséna Museum, where you can learn about the history of Nice, and the neo-gothic Anglican Church. The main draw, however, is the beautiful stretch of the Promenade des Anglais. It’s where you’ll find private and public beaches such as Bella Nissa beach, Blue beach, Le Temps d’un Été beach, and Ruhl beach as well as the iconic Le Negresco.

The Carré d’Or is also a lively neighborhood after dark thanks to the ever-bustling Rue Masséna and Place Magenta. This is by far our favorite area for a stay in Nice with kids. Many travel blogs will tell you otherwise and promote the Cimiez neighborhood for families. But, after about a dozen of visits to Nice with kids, we can assure you that Cimiez is not the best place to stay in Nice for families. It may be a great place to live in Nice for residents with kids but doesn’t make for the best place to stay in Nice for family travelers. It&#;s way too far from the tourist attractions and the beach. Know that most of the travel bloggers who suggest Cimiez for families, in fact travel without kids.

Le Port

The Port of Nice is located at the foot of Castle Hill, the location of the former military citadel that separates Nice Old Town from the Port. Castle Hill overlooks the Baie des Anges on one side and the port on the other. The views over Le Port Lympia, named after the source Lympia that fed the marshland that was once there, are picture-perfect.

The harbor is of great economic importance to the city. In addition to the berthed luxury yachts and the day trip ferries to other French Riviera towns, it also accommodates cruise ships and ferries to Corsica, Sardinia, and even Sicily.

The central quay is called Place de l’Île de Beauté, freely translated as Square of the Isle of Beauty, referring to the Corsica connection. It’s home to the neoclassical Church of Notre-Dame-du-Port with its monumental columns.

A variety of shops, malls, and eateries line Avenue Jean-Médecin. You’ll find the Galeries Lafayette in the southern section, a collection of boutiques and fast fashion brands in the middle section, and a more diverse offer in the northern section.

The starting point of this avenue crosses the Place Masséna, which is one of the most striking places to visit in Nice. It connects to the Promenade du Paillon with its enchanting water mirror fountain. This park is a popular hangout for families.

I noticed that several travel sites refer to this part of the city as New Town but I have no idea where they picked it up. This avenue has been around since the 19th century and is not known as New Town locally.

You won’t find any major tourist attractions in this tranquil corner. Then again, it’s located close enough to the other Nice neighborhoods so that you won’t have to miss out on anything. What you will find is plenty of local shops and restaurants.

From an architectural point of view, the Gambetta &#; Fleurs quarter is a true stunner thanks to the stately Art-deco and Belle Époque facades of the city palaces and mansions that line the streets.

In the south, this pleasant neighborhood is fringed by Voilier beach and Forum beach.
