One Day In Trogir Croatia: The Perfect Itinerary

Trogir in Croatia is one of the most charming and oldest towns on Croatia’s Central Dalmatian Coast. It’s full of history and its surrounding landscape is stunningly beautiful, similar to other top tourist destinations in the region such as Zadar, Split, Sibenik and Dubrovnik. This guide will show you the best things to do in Trogir Croatia and other useful travel tips to help you plan your perfect itinerary.

I recently visited Trogir with my son Tyrone on a day trip from Split and we found it a great place to spend a couple of hours. Walking through Trogir Old Town is a memorable experience that feels like going back in time.

First things first, here are some answers to Trogir Croatia FAQs.

The best time to visit Trogir is during the summer months (June, July and August) when the weather is at its best.

Getting from Split to Trogir is easy. Split City centre is about 30 minutes away by car from Trogir while Split Airport is less than 10 minutes away. A local bus, (line37 starts at Sukoisan Bus Station) serves this route, so if you are not driving, this is probably the cheapest way to travel between Split and Trogir, though it takes a bit longer.

Yes, Trogir is worth visiting, especially for its unique and attractive historic centre. Trogir’s historic centre is located on a small island which is connected by bridges to mainland Croatia and the nearby Ciovo Island.

According to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites profile on Trogir, the remarkable orthogonal street plan of this island settlement dates back to the ancient times when the Greeks found it in the 3rd century BC. As you will discover during your visit, Trogir, often cited as “Little Venice”, is gorgeous from all angles. It’s no surprise it toppedNational Geographic’s list of best Island Cities (2015).

A couple of hours is plenty to explore Trogir’s main attractions. We visited Trogir as a day trip from Split and felt it was enough time in Trogir. See our Split Croatia Travel Guide.

Trogir is known for having a historic centre which is considered the most preserved medieval town in central Europe. The historic centre is often referred to by many as an open museum due to its wealth of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque buildings.

You will be interested to know that due to all the buildings of historical significance (mostly from the Venetian Period) found in Trogir, the whole town centre is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Centre.

What to do in Trogir in one day

Make TheCathedral of St Lawrence, also known as Trogir Cathedral, your first port of call. One thing you can’t help but notice in Trogir is the number of churches in the town. Nearly every corner in the town has a church or a building that was once a church. Nevertheless, St Lawrence Cathedral takes the main spot among all of Trogir’s churches.

Cathedral of St Lawrence

The history of the Cathedral is fascinating as well as its detailed design and furnishings. Its construction began during the 13th century and took several centuries to complete. The Cathedral’s mixed architectural style which includes Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque is a reflection of this long construction period.

Radovan's Portal, Cathedral of St Lawrence

St Lawrence Cathedral’s sculpted entrance is commonly referred to as Radovan’s Portal (named after its sculptor, 13th-century Croatian Master Radovan). It’s worth paying attention to as it’s considered a masterpiece of Romanesque Art in all of Croatia.

Radovan’s Portal is sophisticated and impressive, though it has some similarities with other forms of art which can be found in other churches in the region such as the Cathedral of St James in Sibenik.

One of the most beautiful chapels in the Cathedral, the Chapelof Blessed St John, is another great example of religious Renaissance art which is worth giving a quick look together with various other valuable religious art and artefacts.

Price: (Both Cathedral and Bell Tower)

The Cathedral of St Lawrence’sBell Tower is the tallest structure in Trogir, so taking the challenge to climb to its top is rewarded with fantastic panoramic views of the city.

St Lawrence Cathedral Bell Tower

Similar to other bell towers from that era, the climb is quite steep, narrow and dark, so it’s not ideal for people with reduced mobility.

Cipiko Palace, located just beside the Cathedral of St Lawrence, is a 15th-century palace that belonged to a wealthy family from the Trogir area.

Although the palace is not open to the public, a lot of people stop by just to admire its windows which are beautifully decorated with Gothic Art.

Trogir’s central square is the heart of Trogir where people come to relax whilst having a beer, coffee or gelato at the bars and cafes found around it. If you’re lucky during your visit you might come across local artists who feature regularly at the square singing interesting Croatian folk music.

Trogir Town Square - things to do in Trogir Croatia

The town square is quite small but worth giving your time to as most of the historical buildings and landmarks in the town such as the Cathedral of St Lawrence, the 14th century Town Hall and the 15th century Town Loggia are situated around it.

Trogir Town Loggia - Artwork

Trogir Town Loggia’s origins date back to the 15th century when it served as the hub for political and social life in the town. The Loggia features Gothic and Venetian architecture and now houses Renaissance and modern Croatian artwork, a tiny but charming porch decorated with stone carvings, arches and columns and a rustic wooden ceiling.

Town Hall and Clock Tower

The lovely Clock Tower beside the Town Loggia is another unique addition to the square whilst the Renaissance Town Hall gives the whole area some grandeur. If you have time, give the Town Hall a quick look because it has a beautiful courtyard and is also home to Trogir’s Tourist Information Centre.

Popular Trogir Walking Tour Group

Wandering around Trogir Old Town’s streets discovering cool courtyards and squares, quirky shops and so much more, is one of the big highlights of a trip to Trogir.

As I mentioned earlier, some parts of the Old Town remain unchanged from medieval times, so the streets in the Old Town can sometimes feel like medieval fantasy.

Trogir Old Town Street

An interesting observation I found which adds a special charm to Trogir is that ordinary people still live in the Old Town. You can expect to find things like laundry drying on strings outside many of the buildings in the Old Town.

In addition, the historic city is a car-free zone which makes wandering enjoyable.

Trogir Old Town is 500m long and 250m wide, so you will find that a few steps away from its narrow streets will get you on the waterfront promenade. The waterfront is a great place to indulge your eyes with beautiful yachts sailing and docking on the harbour.

Game of Thrones fans shouldn’t miss Trogir’s waterfront since it featured in season 2 of the TV series as the trading harbour of Quarth.

Trogir Waterfront - Things to do in Trogir Croatia

The wide waterfront’s walkway is beautifully decorated with palm trees, lovely seats and interestingly, is a really clean place. Similar to other coastal towns in the area, the waterfront is lined with restaurants, bars, cafes and local vendors, so it’s quite a vibrant spot and a nice place to hang out.

Boat tour operators along the waterfront are convenient for renting boats to explore surrounding areas or for booking full day trips to some of Croatia’s famous national parks such as Krka National Park and Plitvice Lakes National Park or the popular Blue Lagoon and Blue Cave.

The 15th-century Kamerlengo Castle or Kamerlengo Fortress, is located at the top end of Trogir waterfront. Kamerlengo Castle and the former medieval city walls (destroyed to facilitate the growth of the town), once formed a strong defence for Trogir, especially during the period of Venetian rule (15th to 18th century).

Tower Kamerlengo

Castle Kamerlengo is a popular attraction in Trogir, however, the castle is quite shabby, unlike other fortresses in South Dalmatia such as St Michael’s Fortress in Sibenik. Despite this, a visit to Kamerlengo is an enjoyable experience as its peak affords wonderful views of Trogir, the Adriatic Coast and the islands in the distance.

Bear in mind that the castle is only open during the summer.

It can be a challenge to find restaurants to sample local cuisine that aren’t high-priced or purely tourist-orientated in Trogir. During our recent visit to Trogir, we discovered Don Dino and had an amazing dining experience. We really can’t recommend it enough.

Don Dino Trogir is a well-established family-owned restaurant in the centre of Trogir Old Town. It’s well known for offering a superb menu which makes use of fresh and high-quality locally sourced produce to create Mediterranean-inspired Croatian favourite dishes and more.

Don Dino - Tuna Tartar - Things to do in Trogir

All the menu options at Don Dino are really good, so it’s difficult to choose. However, if you enjoy fish, for a starter we recommend the tuna tartar or white fish carpaccio and for the main meal, our favourites are the smoked risotto with mussels and shrimps or an octopus peka.

There is something for every palate at Don Dino, so do give it a try.

Don Dino’s drinks and wines menu is excellent as well. It offers a good selection of both Croatian bottles and international varieties.

An intimately decorated outdoor terrace overlooking Trogir’s busy streets together with top-notch service makes Don Dino the perfect place for an outstanding dining experience.

Gelato Bar Bella is a popular ice cream shop in Trogir known for serving the best ice cream in town. The ice cream is marketed as made using fresh ingredients including high-quality milk. It’s offered in a wide variety of unique and classic flavours as well as interesting combinations, some with Italian roots like Ricotta and Orange, Lemon and Pistachio.

Gelato Bar Bella’s ice cream, which is best enjoyed whilst people-watching at the Town Square, is the perfect choice to cool down when Trogir’s summer heat is in full swing.

Okrug Gornji Beach locally known as “Copacabana Beach”, is an excellent choice if you are keen to spend some time at the beach either to take a swim, sunbathe or just people-watch.

The beach is located in the municipality of Okrug Gornji on Ciovo Island. As I mentioned before, Čiovo Island is connected to Trogir Old Town by a bridge, so you can easily get to Okrug by driving (10min), taking a local bus, taxi, or water taxi from the Riva or waterfront in Trogir and other surrounding areas.

Trogir Okrug Gornji Beach - things to do in Trogir Croatia

Okrug stretches about 2km along the coast of Ciovo Island on the Adriatic Coast. The beach offers easy access to the water, crystal clear water and clean facilities.

A lengthy boardwalk at the beach features water sports rental equipment stores, beach bars and eateries where you can rent sun loungers, children’s play areas and many other amenities you’ll need for a fun day in the sun.

Havana-Club-Ciovo - things to do in Trogir Croatia

Okrug is one of the most popular beaches in Trogir probably due to its proximity to Trogir town centre, so if you are visiting during the high season expect crowds.
