Epiphone Casino Pickup Upgrade Recommendation

Best Pickups for an Epiphone Casino Upgrade

Seymour Duncan Antiquity P-90 Dog Ear pickups

You'll need a P90 Dog Ear pickup to fit the Epiphone Casino, so we'd go with the Antiquity P90 from Seymour Duncan. It'll be a huge upgrade in tone quality over the stock Epiphone P90s that come with the guitar, and those aren't bad to begin with. You can look at the Gibson P90s as well.

BEST FOR: Vintage tones, cleans, blues, Gibson-esque sounds, smooth overdrive.

  • Pushes your Epiphone Casino a lot closer to the sound of a Gibson Casino for a lot cheaper.
  • Easy drop in for a Dog Ear route.
  • Works great for cheap overdrive pedals.
  • Aged look is a nice touch.
  • Expensive, especially for a single coil passive pickup.
  • You'll need to take off the pickguard to install on the Epiphone Casino, since the one side of the Dog Ear will lay underneath.

Why I like the Seymour Duncan Antiquity P-90s

This is a recommendation purely based on the profile of the guitar in question. Since the Epiphone Casino is a distinctly vintage guitar, I'd want pickups that match the profile and get you a similar tone but at a much higher quality level. Epiphone has decent brand pickups, but they're still what I'd consider stock, and part of the cost-cutting measures that Gibson uses in their Epiphone models (Gibson owns Epiphone). So all we need to do is get a similar pickup from a trusted brand, of which Seymour Duncan is at the top of the list.

The Epiphone Casino starts you off with stock Epiphone P90s, which aren't bad, but upgrading them goes a long way.

You might have to fuss around with the pickguard on the Casino, but otherwise it should be a pretty straightforward installation.

Additional Pickups and Epiphone Casino Upgrades to Consider

Important note: I've seen a fair amount of Epiphone Casinos that have been fitted with a Bigsby, but be careful with any hardware you add, including the Grover tuners. These are significant upgrades, so make sure you do some homework in terms of the sizing and fitting. In most cases, they should work, but do your research and get help from a local shop, if needed.

Selection and Recommendation Methodology

We stick to brands we trust and products we've used or tested. If I haven't gotten a chance to use them first-hand, I have a lot of other musicians I consult with who can vouch for them. That doesn't mean we're always right, but can at least speak from personal experience. All of the content on Guitar Chalk is written by real guitar players and musicians.

A fairly easy choice, given the guitar in question. The Gibson Dog Ears are decent options as well.
