It’s rare that three of cinema’s greats convene at an event outside of the Academy Awards. But on Tuesday, on the other side of the globe, Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and Martin Scorsese did just that, holding court in Macau, where the revered trio unveiled their minute short filmThe Audition.

The reportedly $70 million film was commissioned for the opening of Melco Crown Entertainment Ltd.’s Hollywood-themed Studio City resort. And, at a press conference, the three Hollywood heavyweights discussed their reunion.

“The great honor for me is these two men are really like my two fathers in the world of cinema,” DiCaprio said. “My first film was with Bob De Niro. I was 15 years old. We did a film together called This Boy’s Life. I’ve had the fortune of working with Marty quite a few times.”

The plot of the film centers on De Niro and DiCaprio auditioning for the same role in a Scorsese film, an idea that the actors found particularly entertaining since they are both considered the filmmaker’s muses.

“The premise of this competition was very humorous for both of us,” DiCaprio explained, “because we’ve both done a lot of films with Mr. Scorsese so what would it be like if we both showed up at this casino competing for the same role but we didn’t know it yet. But for me, the great joy was finally getting to be on set with both of these guys.” Referring to De Niro and Scorsese’s past collaborations, DiCaprio said, “This is the greatest relationship in cinema history in my opinion.”

In the film, Brad Pitt also makes a cameo, but DiCaprio maintained that the best actor who appears in the short was not him, Pitt, or De Niro, but Scorsese himself.

“The truth is he kind of stole the show,” DiCaprio said of the cameo. “At the end of the day, he’s the best out of everyone in this short. He’s pretty amazing as an actor.”

While Scorsese would not agree to that point, he did acknowledge that the three have an incredible bond.

“I think a lot of it had to do with the closeness of the three of us,” the filmmaker said. “In terms of meeting Leo, it was Bob who told me about him.”

Producer Brett Ratner, who was also on hand, teased that he would love to see the short adapted into a feature film.

“It’s just a teaser,” Ratner said, before pitching, “We come to Macau, Marty comes here, lives at the hotel for three months, six months and we make a big event movie.”

Although that sounds great in theory, if the $million-forminutes-of-film ratio applied, a feature-length project would cost upwards of $ million.

According to The Independent, the Hollywood-themed resort also features “a Batman flight simulator ride, a figure-8 Ferris wheel and Art Deco architecture evoking Hollywood’s early days.”
